  • Decorating the central premises of the Transylvanian city of Târgu Mureș, the Ascension of the Lord Cathedral (also known as “Catedrala Înălţarea Domnului”) was built between the years 1925 and 1934. Constructed according to the plans of Romanian architect Victor Vlad, the church can be found in the Square of Roses (Piața Trandafirilor). There are two interesting facts about this magnificent structure that should be kept in mind when visiting Târgu Mureș. First of all, it is technically not a cathedral (even though it is called as such) because it is the seat of an archpriest and not a bishop. Secondly, it was built to resemble a Greek cross. Oh, and if you are wondering about the scintillation of the interior decorations, know that they are relatively new – having been finished in 1986.
