  • Located deep within the heart of the city of Cluj-Napoca (Transylvania, Romania) upon the Avram Iancu Square, the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is one of the most spectacular sights of the country. Built by architects George Cristinel and Constantin Pomponiu between 1923 and 1933, it was consecrated in the latter year. Reaching a maximum height of 64 metres and harbouring eight majestic domes, it pertains to the Eastern Orthodox Church (the second largest Christian church in the world). Inspired by the scintillating Hagia Sophia of the Turkish city of Istanbul, the cathedral possesses four Romanian Brâncovenesc style towers as well. Master artists Anastasie Demian and Catul Bogdan (professors at the local Art Academy) handled the interior decorations and murals.
