  • Known officially as “Catedrala Încoronării”, Alba Iulia’s Coronation Cathedral is one of the most spectacular religious sights in Transylvania (Romania). Dedicated to the Holy Trinity and the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, the church is the undisputed nucleus of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Alba Iulia. Made of stone and adorned with three majestic spires, it reaches a maximum height of 40 metres. Adhering to the subtle standards of the Byzantine architectural style, it harbours certain Brâncovenesc elements as well. Designed by Romanian master architect Victor Gheorghe Ștefănescu, the cathedral was built between 1921 and 1922 – its consecration occurred as soon as the latter year. Visitors are also advised to check out the splendid Michael the Brave mosaic within its bounds.
