  • As you may have already gathered by now, Italy is one of the best places in the world to visit when it comes to grandiose religious structures. As almost every cathedral can be affiliated with a legend, it was only fitting that Romes’ Santa Maria Maggiore cathedral should be no exception. It is said that the Virgin Mary appeared to Pope Liberius and to Patrizio Giovanni and charged them to build a church dedicated to her, indicating the designated site with a miracle. In the morning of the 5 August, snow began to descend upon Esquiline Hill and thus the cathedral was built there. It is one of the biggest and oldest basilicas of Rome and for that particular reason, it has also become one of its most photographed landmarks. Finalised in the 5th century, it adheres to a fine blend between the Roman and the Baroque architectural styles. A definite must-see!
