  • Situated proudly in the heart of the Hungarian city of Pécs, the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral (known also as the Sts. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral Basilica and the Szent Péter és Szent Pál Székesegyház) is the functioning core of the Diocese of Pécs. Archaeologists date the origins of the church back to Roman times (around the 4th century) and it is also believed that it served as an important milestone of Christian expansion under the leadership of the renowned Stephen I. Undergoing several reconstructions, the cathedral adheres to the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The Neo-Romanesque incarnation of the building is the result of the work of master architect Friedrich von Schmidt Viennese between 1882 and 1891. With a length of 70 metres and a width of 22, the cathedral reaches a heigth of 60 metres.
