Situated proudly in the heart of Budapest (Hungary), on the eastern bank of the Danube River, the Orthodox Cathedral of Our Lady (also known as “Istenszülő Elhunyta Nagyboldogasszony-Székesegyház”) is one of the most important Greek Orthodox structures in the country. Built between the years 1791 and 1801 according to the plans of Hungarian master architect Jung József, it is visible on most panoramic photos made of Budapest. The intricacies of the façade, however, have been designed and completed by Ybl Miklós in 1873. What’s interesting about it is that during the siege of the city in 1945, one of its towers collapsed – it has not been restored since.
