Known officially as the “Erzsébet híd”, the Elisabeth Bridge is one of the most fascinating suspension bridges of the mighty capital of Hungary. Connecting the Buda section of Budapest with the Pest section across the Danube River, the Elisabeth Bridge is the third newest one built for the city. With a total length of 376.6 metres and a width of 28.1 (with a longest span of 290 metres), it was designed by the Hungarian engineer Pál Sávoly and built between 1961 and 1964. Defined as a six-lane road bridge, its two extremities are the Döbrentei Square with the monument of Saint Gellért on Gellért Hill and the March 15 Square with the oldest church of the city: the Inner City Parish Church. The bridge was named after the renowned Elisabeth of Bavaria (the empress of the Austria-Hungary) and a large bronze statue can be found of her on the Buda side.
