  • The soviet war memorial, also known as Tiergarten, was erected in 1945 by the Soviet Union to commemorate the soldiers fallen in the battle of Berlin. The marble it was fashioned from had come from the destroyed governmental buildings of its immediate vicinity. Former soldiers of the Soviet Union can visit this fine masterpiece to find closure each year on 8 May. Sitting majestically in the Großer Tiergarten, adjacent to the city center, it has gradually an unparalleled tourist hotspot. It has not always been a peaceful memorial though, for, after the commission of the Berlin Wall in 1961, it found itself in the western section of the city. Considered a sign of communist provocation, it has been vandalized on multiple occasions.
