  • Completed in 1654, Barbados’ Nidhe Israel Synagogue is one of the most exciting landmarks of the island. Constantly destroyed and rebuilt (either by a hurricane or simply by disrepair), the Bridgetown-based religious establishment is like a proud bastion of reincarnation calling for visitors. Known also as Bet Knesset Nide Yisrael (literally translatable as Synagogue of the Scattered of Israel), it is one of the oldest synagogues in the western hemisphere. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as a part of the area called “Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison”) in 2011 along with excavated mikveh (baths intended for subtle religious immersion), it is also a Barbados National Trust property. Checking out the recently-opened Nidhe Israel Museum (2008) is also advised for those who happen to be in the area.
